The station was established in 1805. The present lighthouse was built in 1847 and discontinued in 1877. The original lighthouse was octagonal, with shingles on the sides and roof. It stood at 35 feet and the light could be seen for 6 miles. However, by 1840, the beacon's visibility was obstructed by trees and it was decided to replace it with the lighthouse to be seen today. The grounds are open year-round but the tower is not open on a regular basis. The Lighthouse Point Park Rangers offer a historical program that includes a climb of the lighthouse.
