Bridgeport Hospital was established in 1878 by a group of community leaders, including showman and Bridgeport Mayor P.T. Barnum, who became their first hospital president.
They are a private, not-for-profit, and the principal affiliate of Southern Connecticut Health System (SCHS) with Ahlbin Centers for Rehabilitation Medicine, United Visiting Nurse Association, NovaMed Corp, and the Bridgeport Hospital Foundation.
Bridgeport Hospital is the most comprehensive hospital in Fairfield County with 425 licensed beds, 2,000 employees, 400 active attending physicians representing 60 subspecialties, 90 medical/surgical residents and fellows in programs affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine, and more than 500 volunteers and auxilians.
