In the early 1900's a colony of artists led by Solon Borglum, settled here, lured by the countryside. The barn, then known as the Knockers Club, was the meeting place. The group outgrew the barn and launched the Silvermine Guild Arts Center. The Guild of Artists was formally incorporated in 1922. Since then came classes in the early 20's; the School of Art offically opened in 1924. Through the years, the school offered not only classes in the visual arts, but dance, filmmaking, and acting classes as well.
