Anacostia Park |
This park lies on both sides of the Anacostia River in the northeast and southeast sections of the city. In 1608, a year after the founding of Jamestown, Captain John Smith made his way up the Potomac River and found the large Indian village of Nacotchtank, which is believed to have been in the southern end of what is now Anacostia Park.
The 1,271 acre park contains a tidal marsh, tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer and baseball fields, swimming pool, skating rink and pavilion. Fishing and bicycling are permitted.
