Corcoran Gallery of Art
|
In 1869 banker W.W. Corcoran donated his private art collection to start the first art gallery in Washington, DC. It is now one of the oldest museums in the country. Located a couple of blocks from the White House on 17th Street, this gallery contains an extensive collection of American paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture from the 18th century to the present. Its permanent displays also include the W.A. Clark Collection of European paintings and sculpture, tapestries and pottery as well as the Salon Dore, 17th century French gilded room. Changing exhibits of contemporary art and works by fine art photographers and local artists are offered.
