National Zoological Park is a bureau of the Smithsonian Institution, 163-acre in Rock Creek Park, was established by an Act of Congress in 1889 for advancement of science and the instruction and recreation of the people. About 2,800 animals and 435 different species currently comprise the animal collection at the National Zoo. About one-fifth of the species are endangered or threatened. Most of the species are on exhibit.
