The Animal Welfare Institute is a non-profit charitable organization founded in 1951. The goals of the institute are to reduce the sum total of pain and fear inflicted on animals by humans, refinement of the housing and handling of laboratory animals, development and use of non-animal testing methods, prohibition on use of steel jaw leghold traps and, reform of other cruel methods of controlling wildlife.
