National Mall
|
Though technically the National Mall is bounded by Constitution and Independence avenues on the north and south, and 3rd and 14th streets on the east and west, many people describe the Capitol Building and the Lincoln Memorial as the eastern- and western-most boundaries of this expansive green space. It is encircled by approximately a dozen museums, nine of which are Smithsonians, and most of which offer free admission.
The Mall is also a park ("America's town green") where picnics, festivals, fireworks, and other events take place regularly. Jogging enthusiasts consider a run around the circumference of the Mall a great 5-mile workout. Portable concession stands and benches are everywhere along the museums' frontage streets, offering souvenirs, refreshments and rest for the travel-weary.
