The Phillips Collection |
Duncan Phillips, with his wife Marjorie, collected more than 2,000 works of art over a period of 50 years. Their goal, which was realized, was to present a museum of modern art within a domestic setting. He believed that "people would be inclined to return once they have found it and to linger as long as they can for art's special sort of pleasure."
Located on 21st Street in the Phillips' House, the museum holds a distinguished collection of 19th century and contemporary American and European paintings. The most famous piece displayed is Pierre Auguste Renoir's `Luncheon of the Boating Party`; other artists's whose works are here include van Gogh, Monet, Degas, Gauguin, and Cezanne. The museum regularly presents temporary exhibits in the Goh Annex.
