The Smithsonian American Art Museum is the home of the largest collection of American art in the world. Its holdingsover 39,000 workstell the story of America through the visual arts and represent the most inclusive collection of American art of any museum today. It is the nation's first federal art collection, predating the 1846 founding of the Smithsonian Institution. The artworks were transferred to the Smithsonian Institution in the 1850s.

In 1968, the collection moved into its current home in the historic Patent Office Building. Perhaps the finest example of Greek Revival architecture in the United States, it is the third oldest federal building in Washington D.C. Clara Barton tended wounded soldiers here when the building served as a hospital during the Civil War, and in March 1865, it was the site of Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural ball.

The Smithsonian began an extensive renovation of this landmark building in 2001, and anticipates completion in 2006.
