Dartmoor National Park was created in 1951. It encompasses some 369 square miles or 953 square km of beautiful moorland with windswept tors and wooded valleys. About 31,000 people live within its boundaries, to which are added about 10 million visitors annually. The public can roam freely on unenclosed open moorland on both horse and foot. The park is rich in wildlife as well as archaeological remains.
