Search Visit

The House of Lancaster was founded by John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, Duke of Lancaster, fourth son of Edward III. His son overthrew Richard II in 1399 and became Henry IV, first Lancastrian king of England. He was succeeded by Henry V and Henry VI. The latter ruled from 1422 to 1471 except for a period between 1461 and 1470 when the House of York ruled through Edward IV. The struggle between the Lancastrians and the Yorkists was known as the War of the Roses.
