Hadrian's Wall is the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain. The best known frontier in the entire Roman Empire, it stands as a reminder of one of the world's great civilizations. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1987, Hadrian's Wall ranks alongside the Taj Mahal and other great wonders of the world. Spanning nearly 2,000 years of history, a visit to Hadrian's Wall is a must for anyone visiting the North of England. Visitor centers, museums, forts, milecastles, temples and turrets appear all along the Wall. Much of the land on which the Wall is built is privately owned; visitors are asked to keep to public footpaths and close all gates behind you. For some good walking in spectacular countryside and the best of the ruins, visitors are strongly advised to concentrate walking in the area between Hexham and Brampton. Hadrian's Wall bus available as well. Contact the Hadrian's Wall Information Line, Tel: 01434 322002
