Lancaster is the county town of Lancashire, situated on the Lune River near its mouth on Morecambe Bay. The town is located 55 miles north of Liverpool. The chief point of interest is a medieval castle, which retains its ancient keep and Norman tower, built in 1170. Originally built by the Saxons, the castle was rebuilt by the Romans during Hadrian's reign. Robert the Bruce attacked it in 1332, and when it withstood his siege, he burnt the town. John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster again rebuilt the castle. Cromwell captured it during the Civil War.
