Levens Hall, an Elizabethan mansion constructed around a 13th-century pele tower, is known for its tales of ghostly happenings; rooms include the dining room with embossed Cordova leather wall-coverings, and many elegant bedrooms. Beautiful paintings, family memorabilia, and the earliest English Patchwork (circa 1708), can be seen throughout the house. The Topiary Gardens are world-famous; work on the gardens was begun in 1694, and the garden design has remained unchanged for over 300 years. There is also a rose garden, a nuttery, herbaceous borders, and a fountain garden laid out with pleached limes. On-site gift shop offers 'Morocco Ale' for sale; a secret recipe brewed at Levens for 300 years. On Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays during the season, a 6" scale (half size) Traction Engine provides rides around the grounds. Open April-October.
