Manchester Airport

Barton, five miles west of the city, was in 1929 the location of the first municipal airfield in the UK to be licensed by the Air Ministry. Later a small airfield at Ridgeway was transformed into a commercial airport. After the war, part of the old Parachute School was converted to handle an increasing number of passengers. Two years later the runway was lengthened and in the 1960's a terminal building with air traffic control facilities and two passenger piers was added. In the 1980s the airport was designated an International Gateway handling direct long-haul international flights.

Manchester Airport's railway station is at the heart of the airport complex. Skylinks connect the three Airport terminals to the upper level of the railway station.

Train services operate to the Airport from many stations in Northern England and the Midlands. There are trains direct to and from Sheffield, York, Leeds, Huddersfield, Manchester, Bolton, Preston and Blackpool throughout the night.
