New Forest National Park

The New Forest National Park is planned as the first new National Park of the new millennium. The government proposed in September 1999 that it be given National Park status. The proposed park will contain a distinctive combination of woodland, open grazed areas, the largest lowland heath in Britain, as well as towns and villages. It includes the most intact medieval hunting and pastoral system in Britain, perhaps in Europe. It is the only royal forest where traditional ownership and practices survive through Forest Law, administered by the Court of Verderers.
