The northernmost of the National Parks of England and Wales,
Northumberland National Park contains great archaeological sites like Hadrian's walls and prehistoric settlements in the
Cheviot Hills, as well as unique buildings such as the "bastles," or fortified farmhouses, which testify to the violent history of this border region.
Hill farming of cattle and sheep is a prevalent practice and the heather moors are carefully managed for grouse hunting. There are a variety of endangered wildlife species that call the park home.
