Norwich is the capital city of
Norfolk, situated on the Wensum River above its confluence with the Ware. It is 115 miles northeast of
London.
There are traces of Danish walls and gates, along with the ruins of a Norman castle erected soon after the Conquest. The cathedral, founded in 1096, is in part of Norman architecture. Largely destroyed by fire in the 13th century, it was thereafter rebuilt, and has a handsome 15th-century spire 315 feet high.
Norwich was an important town under the Danes in the 9th century and at the time of the Conquest was a thriving place.
