The Old Fulling Mill, formerly a mill operating as part of the Cathedral estates, now houses the Museum of Archaeology. The museum was founded in 1833, the year after the university, and was the second university museum in England to be opened to the public. Among the museum's permanent exhibits are a reconstructed stone cist from Brandon, a major collection of Roman inscriptions from the north of England, an outstanding collection of Samian ware, well preserved Medieval finds from Durham City which include examples of pottery, leatherwork, wooden artifacts and a bone skate.
