Built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594 and set within the grounds of a magnificent parkland, Sherborne Castle has been the home of the Digby family since 1617. The castle houses a prestigious collection of pictures, porcelain and other historic treasures. Visitors will see Great State Rooms, the Solarium, Library and more; all rooms have magnificent views of the park and lake. The tranquil and unique castle includes Tudor, Jacobean and Georgian-period influences; the grounds, landscaped by 'Capability Brown,' extend over 30 acres around a 50-acre lake, bordered on the Castle side by the Adam-style Orangery, the Tea Garden and lawns. Across the lake are the ruins of the great battlements of Sherborne's first castle, built by the Normans in the 12th century. Open April 1-end of October. Tea rooms offer light lunches and teas; parking available. Tel: 01935 813 182 Fax: 01935 816 727
