This outstanding, but little-visited site features a compact circle of 55 stones, considered by some to be one of the finest stone circles in Western Europe. The Swinside circles is just over 93 1/2 ft in diameter, with two portal stones outside the circumference and a well-defined entrance at the southeast. What appears to be a midwinter sunrise marker faces the two southernmost portal stones in the center; the tallest of the stones is 7 1/2 ft tall and stands almost exactly at the north.
