The remains of this abbey are situated high on a clifftop overlooking picturesque Whitby and the harbour. Whitby Abbey contained the shrine of St Hilda, the foundress who died in 680, and symbolized the continuing Christian tradition in the north. Destroyed by Viking invaders, rebuilt by Normans, embellished by later generations and dismantled by Henry VIII, the abbey is today a gaunt and moving ruin. Access to the abbey is up the 199 steps from Whitby town; unsuitable for wheelchairs. Open daily, year-round (closed Dec 24-26). Tel: 01947 603568
