Clewiston is located in Hendry County west of West Palm Beach between Fort Myers and Belle Glade along US Highway 27 on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River. Situated on the south shore of Lake Okeechobee.
Early Florida history indicates that the Clewiston area was first used as a campsite by the Indians as they fished the bass-laden waters of Lake Okeechobee. This area also attracted early adventurers and pioneer farmers, most notable a temporary settlement of Japanese farmers who began to grow vegetables in the fertile lakeside soil about 1915.
The Seminole Indian Tribe still today remains in this area, and has never signed a peace treaty and it proudly calls itself The Unconquered. The first permanent white development was undertaken in 1920 by Philadelphia investors.
This community offers many different educational and sporting recreation opportunities year-round.
