The largest remaining subtropical wilderness in the nation. The area is essentially a slow-moving freshwater river, fed by
Lake Okeechobee and inhabited by rare bird and animal species. It covers almost the entire tip of the Florida Peninsula west of
Miami and
Fort Lauderdale.
