Fort Caroline National Memorial

Marks the site near which French Colonial adventurers established a settlement in 1564. A year later, Spaniards massacred many of them at Matanzas Inlet. A model of the fort is reached by a 1/4 mile path through oak woods. Visitor center displays include armor, 16th-century weaponry and coins. Open daily, 9am-5pm; closed Christmas Day. Free to the public.

The Memorial is about 13 miles east of downtown Jacksonville.
