Preserving the Past to Protect the Future |
The focus of the Holocaust Center is to promote public awareness of freedom and human rights by learning the lessons of the Holocaust. The Museum Exhibit illustrates the development of Jewish pre-war communities in Europe, their contributions and their tribulations. Hitlers rise to power is outlined as well as the spread of violence and persecution through the outbreak of World War II, and the subsequent isolation of Jews in ghettos, concentration camps, and death camps is depicted. Attention is focused on the resistance and rescue efforts; other exhibits highlight Holocaust art by Dr. Luba Gurdus. Multi-media displays relate key events and documentary evidence including material from Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, and personal oral histories of local survivors and liberators. The Center sponsors community programs throughout the year that include annual film series, lectures, and docent-guided tours; a library of important archival and documentary.
