Key West National Wildlife Refuge

Key West National Wildlife Refuge consists unpopulated mangrove islands and open waters immediately west of Key West, Florida. The vast majority of the area managed is marine environment. Along with Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge, the Key West Refuge represents the last of the offshore islands in the Lower Florida Keys available as critical nesting, roosting, loafing, and wading habitat for over 250 avian species and critical nesting habitat for endangered sea turtles. Ten animal and three plant species currently listed as endangered occur on the refuge. Many visitors are drawn by the unique wilderness experience. Snorkelers, divers, fishermen, birdwatchers, pleasure boaters, and nature enthusiasts find many opportunities in the vast expanse of refuge.

The Refuge is only accessible by boat. Information can be obtained at the National Key Deer Refuge administrative office.
