Originally an artist's colony founded in the 1930s, The Maitland Art Center is a historic site, art museum and teaching facility dedicated to the memory of its founder, Jules Andre Smith. Today, the Art Center is a dynamic institution which focuses on museum exhibitions, art classes taught by professional artists, and community-related programs and lectures scheduled throughout the year.
The uniquely-designed complex, circa the 1930s, includes 23 buildings decorated with fantastic murals, ba s-reliefs and carvings after the Aztec and Mayan styles. Walkways wind through courtyards and gardens; guided tours are available. Admission is free to the public. Gallery and museum open daily; closed major holidays.
