Mary Esther is located in Okaloosa County east of Pensacola between Navarre and Fort Walton Beach off of US Hwy 98, near Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

Mary Esther is part of the Fort Walton Beach, Florida metro area.

The first pioneer of Mary Esther came in 1842 when Jesse Rogers and his family drove a large herd of cattle from Louisiana to the shores of Santa Rosa Sound and settled here.
