Polk Museum of Art'More Than an Art Museum' |
Located in Lakeland's historic downtown district, the Museum is a cultural hub for visitors of all ages, offering spectacular exhibitions and events at no cost to the public since it opened in 1966. The Museum houses nine galleries on two floors, including an outdoor sculpture garden and a permanent gallery devoted to its extensive Precolumbian art collection. With an emphasis on contemporary American art, European decorative arts, and Asian art, the Museum seeks to introduce families to art through lunchtime lectures, classes for adults and children, family workshops, and free docent-led tours. In its 25th year, the museum-hosted Mayfaire by-the-Lake event brings more than 60,000 people to the shores of nearby Lake Morton, where more than 180 artists display their wares in May. Located within walking distance of Florida State College; closed on major holidays.
