Fort Zachary Taylor, originally begun in 1845, remained in Union hands throughout the Civil War and was later utilized during the Spanish-American War. Today the structure, which contains the largest collection of Civil War cannons in the United States, is part of an 87-acre state park that includes a shaded picnic area and Atlantic-front beach. Believe it or not, this 1/4-mile beach is man made. It's predominately a coral stone beach with patches of sand. Although tough on the feet, this is a great beach for swimming, diving and snorkeling because the water is rather deep. The concession stand sells, but does not rent, snorkeling gear. If you're hungry, grab some hot or cold food and beverages at the concession stand, or eat your own food under the picnic pavilion.
