Located 40 km SE of Corte at the mouth of the River Tavignano on the islands east coast, Aleria was founded as a trading port in 564 BC by a colony of Phoenicians. The town offers visitors a rich archaeological heritage, some of which is on display at the Musee Jerome Carcopino, housed in the 16th-century Fort Matra.
