Cathedrale Notre-Dame d'Amiens
|
Added to Unesco's World Heritage List in 1981, Amiens Cathedral (Place Notre-Dame) is one of the largest "classic" Gothic churches of the 13th century. It was built to house the head of St. John the Baptist, brought back from the Crusades in 1206, which is still displayed in the Treasury. The cathedral opens onto the nave and its seven bays, 14.60 meters wide on average and 54 meters long. Due to the extremely high vaults, the great number of openings and the glass triforium above the choir and transept, the light inside the cathedral is exceptional. The architect, Robert de Luzarches, designed the Gothic structure based on the cathedral at Reims. Guided tours are offered in French by the Tourist Office.
