Located on a plateau above the Anguienne and Charente rivers, 82 km SW of Limoges, the industrial town of Angouleme is dominated by the 12th-century Cathedrale St-Pierre, whose facade contains some very good examples of Romanesque sculpture. The ramparts that enclose the upper town afford an encompassing view of the surrounding countryside.
