Notre-Dame de Lorette

Search Arras

A few kilometers to the northwest of Vimy Ridge, outside of Arras, is the church of Notre-Dame de Lorette, the site of a costly French offensive in May 1915. The original church was destroyed during the war and rebuilt in Neo-Byzantine style. It now stands at the center of a vast graveyard with over 20,000 crosses laid out in pairs. There are 20,000 more buried in the ossuary. The small Musee Vivant 1914-1918, located behind the church, displays photographs, uniforms and other military paraphernalia. You can reach Notre-Dame de Lorette by bus from Arras, direction "Lens."
