Located 182 miles SE of Paris and 53 miles SW of Dijon, Autun is one of the oldest towns in France. Called "the other Rome" in the days of the Roman Empire, the town was founded in the late 1st century BC under the name Agustodunum (the town of Augustus). The remains of the Theatre Romain, which held some 15,000 spectators, the tower of the Temple de Janus and the monumental Porte St-Andre stand as reminders of Autuns Roman past.
