Situated on the east bank of the Rhone River, 80 km NW of Aix-en-Provence, the cultural center of Avignon is encompassed by 13 km of medieval ramparts. The seat of the papal court during the 14th century, Avignon is dominated by the enormous Palais des Papes, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today Avignon has gained recognition as a city of culture, culminating in the annual summer Festival dAvignon, a 3-week celebration of art, theater and music.
