Palais des Papes

Search Avignon

Situated on the east side of the place du Palais, this former residence of the popes of Avignon retains little of its original lavish ornamentation. In 1309, Pope Clement V moved the seat of the papal court to Avignon to escape the political unrest in Rome. His successor decided to remain in Avignon, and the third pope to take power there, Benedict XII, built this colossal palace. The complex includes the Chapelle St-Jean, with its 14th-century frescoes; the Grand Tinel (banquet hall), which now houses a series of 17th- and 19th-century Gobelin tapestries, and the Stag Room, the study of Clement VI ornamented with hunting frescoes and ceramic tiles. The papal court in Avignon was disbanded in 1417 with the election of Martin V.
