Beauvais France |
Located at the confluence of the Avelon and Therain rivers, 66 km north of Paris, Beauvais was heavily bombed during WWII and has been largely rebuilt. The towns principal monument, the Carolingian Cathedral of Saint-Pierre was to have been the largest cathedral in Europe. However, after suffering several structural collapses, it was never completed. Today, it is a remarkable Gothic structure, standing only as chapels, a choir and a transept, which contains most of its original 16th-century stained glass.
