Nestled between the southern Vosges and the northern reaches of the Jura mountains, the city of Belfort is divided by the Savoureuse River into two distinct parts. On the river's west bank there are extensive industrial and commercial areas, while on the east bank lies the Old Town, dominated by a fortified castle and punctuated by an 11-meter-high red sandstone lion, built by Bartholdi in recognition of the citys resistance to siege during the Prussian War. Belfort holds a famous weekend antiques market every first weekend from March to December and boasts the oldest grocery store in France. A short drive from town is the beautiful Notre-Dame du Haut chapel at Ronchamp, a masterwork by Le Corbusier.
