Located along the Bay of Biscay, just west of Bayonne and 18 km from the Spanish border, the one-time fishing village of Biarritz was made popular by Empress Eugenie and her husband, Napoleon III, who enjoyed the town s year-round mild climate. Today it is the surfing capital of Europe, offering visitors beautiful beaches, two casinos and the ultra luxurious Hotel du Palais, the former residence of Eugenie built in the mid-19th century by Napoleon. Several high-speed TGV trains per day connect Biarritz with Paris and Lille, with direct trains departing from the town to Madrid, Lisbon and Porto. Daily direct flights from Paris are also available.
