The site of the 19th-century Basilique Notre-Dame has been a religious center since the 7th century, famous not only in France but throughout the world. A wooden statue of the Virgin and Child, discovered in the region in 636, was placed in the Roman church first built on the site in 1090. Enriched in the 12th and 14th centuries by Gothic elements and a cloister, this church became a place of pilgrimage. Destroyed during the Revolution, it was reconstructed in the 19th century in a style inspired by Saint Peter's in Rome and Saint Paul's in London. Its cupola dominates the city.
