Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957), a Romanian sculptor, settled in Paris in 1904. Working in marble, bronze and wood, Brancusi sought to move away from the depiction of natural elements to concentrate on the expression of pure form, paving the way for abstract sculpture in the 20th century. The Atelier Brancusi, located in the piazza of the Georges Pompidou Center, is a recreation of Brancusis workshop containing the artists entire collection of works, bequeathed to the French state upon his death.
