The port city of Brest is situated in a natural harbor, protected from storms by the Corzon Peninsula located south of the city. Bombed beyond recognition during World War II to prevent the Germans from using the city as a submarine base, Brest is now a modern commercial center and France s premier naval port. The city, located 351 miles west of Paris, is divided by the Penfeld River, the two halves joined by Europe s largest lifting bridge, the Pont de Recouvrance.
