Caen

Located 223 km from Paris (2-1/2 hrs by train) and only 14 km from the sea, Caen is situated between the Orne and Odon rivers. The favorite residence of William the Conqueror and his wife, Matilda, during the 11th century, Caen contains reminders of their presence here. While their chateau was destroyed during WWII, along with two-thirds of the city, the twin abbeys created by the royal couple managed to escape a similar fate. Also worth a visit is Le Memorial, a museum dedicated to peace.
