Calais has three main shopping areas: the Place D'Armes and Rue Royale are closest to the port, while Boulevard Jacquard and Boulevard La Fayette are in the south of the town past the Town Hall. All are within an easy walk of each other. They boast a range of shops and clothes boutiques and a mixture of specialist outlets. Colourful and lively open air markets are held twice weekly in the Place d'Armes (Wednesday and Saturday) and Place Crevecoeur (Thursday and Saturday). English is not a problem, as all shopkeepers, restaurant and hotel owners benefit from English language instruction organized by the Calais Chamber of Commerce. The two major hypermarkets in Calais are the Auchan, just off the N1 going towards Boulogne, and Carrefour in Cite Europe.
