Cannes

Located 26 km SW of Nice and connected to each of the resorts along the Riviera via rail or bus, Cannes has become synonymous with the film industry -- recognized worldwide for its International Film Festival held each May. The Old Town is clustered around the Le Suquet district, located on the slopes of Mont Chevalier. Points of interest include the 16th- to 17th-century Notre-Dame de lEsperance, built in the Provencal Gothic style, and the famed boulevard de la Croisette, lined with luxury hotels and private beaches. Also of interest is a visit to the nearby Iles de Lerins, which includes the fort on Ile Ste-Marguerite, where the "Man in the Iron Mask" was imprisoned in the late 17th century. Boats depart from Gare Maritime in the Vieux Port.
