Located 302 miles W of Paris and 23 miles SE of Lorient, the seaside resort of Carnac is home to nearly 3,000 granite menhirs (prehistoric monoliths) dating from Neolithic times. The stones are arranged in parallel rows, the meaning of which is still unknown, in several fields north of the city center. The town itself is divided into the original city center, now labeled Carnac-Ville, and the family resort area of Carnac-Plage, located on the waterfront.
