The beautiful Petit Palais, built for the Universal Exhibition of 1900 by Charles Girault, houses a major collection of works dating from antiquity until the beginning of the 20th century. The ancient art collection is largely attributable to the Dutuit brothers, who bequeathed their rich collections of ancient and medieval artifacts, French and Italian Renaissance pieces and Flemish and Dutch paintings in 1902, supplemented by the Tuck Collection, featuring 18th-century paintings, sculptures, tapestries and objets d'art. The museum also owns a series of 19th-century works commissioned and bought by the City of Paris, plus works attained through major donations and current-day acquisitions.
